Sylvan Highlands (zip code 97221), is a secluded, serene neighborhood in southwest Portland. The word sylvan is derived from Silvanus, the Roman deity of the woods. The name seems appropriate for an area more like a forest than an urban neighborhood.
This hill-side, heavy wooded area consists of ranch style homes and recently built modern homes with panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains. Most of the homes were built in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s with some homes facing Highway 26 from the 1930s and 1940s. Most homes in Sylvan-Highlands are owner occupied.
Moderate rolling hills, very wooded, narrow winding streets with an absence of sidewalks make up this not too "pedestrian friendly" neighborhood. Conveniently located to big city amenities, however, Sylvan is only a 10 minute drive to downtown. The average sold price for real estate in Sylvan Highlands for 2007 was $703,994.
