The area owes much of its historical opulence to Captain John Couch, a merchant ship commander and prominent Portlander who first laid claim to Northwest Portland in the mid 19th century. Under his guidance, the neighborhood soon developed into an area of great wealth, inhabited by merchants and traders looking to make a show of their fortunes. Due to an astounding concentration of wealth and large homes owned by nobility, the NW Portland neighborhood was soon dubbed ‘Nob Hill’ because of its similarity to its San Francisco counterpart.
Tree-lined streets with turn-of-the-century Victorian homes transformed into colorful storefronts and restaurants make up trendy Northwest 23rd Street, the core of the best and brightest of the boutique scene in Portland. The Nob Hill, Portland real estate area is also a place to look for historic and new condos, city lofts and townhomes. Walking is a favorite means of transportation, along with the Portland streetcar that winds through the area on its way to the Pearl District and downtown.
