The western part of the neighborhood, especially the area between Hawthorne Boulevard and Stark Street just downhill from the park, contains some truly grand houses in a mix of styles ranging from Italianate and Queen Ann Victorian to Arts and Crafts and Colonial Revival. Many of these homes have views of the downtown skyline, and some have large yards with massive specimen trees, that are now well over a century old. Mixed in with these elegant near-mansions are a host of more modest bungalows, foursquares, Dutch colonials, and English cottages. Mt. Tabor homes on the north side, which was developed much later, includes a large number of mid-century ranches.
The street pattern is grid with sidewalks for walking. There are essentially no commercial areas within Mt. Tabor, built most homes are within walking distance of a shopping district the Hawthorne and Belmont districts on the west side. Drive time to downtown Portland is around 11 to 15 minutes. There is no MAX light rail or streetcar, but TriMet has four bus lines running thru the neighborhood.
Mt. Tabor attracts a rich diversity of residents due to the range of home prices; you will find the affluent to white collar singles and young married couples living in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood.
