Mississippi Avenue District, Portland Real Estate
The North Portland community of Mississippi has come through a remarkable resurgence in the last 5 years; more so than any other North Portland neighborhood. This was an area you just didn’t go into. Today, however, Mississippi Avenue boasts over 40 businesses, including restaurants, coffee shop, a bike shop, nursery, the largest recycled Rebuilding Center in the nation, and a recording studio.
In 1999 the city of Portland created the Mississippi Historic District Target Area to improve public safety, upgrade housing and attract businesses. The city offered many benefits to people, and the results speak for themselves. All the businesses on Mississippi are local. There is a plethora of restaurants to choose from, some of the best boutiques in Portland, live music at the Mississippi Pub almost every night, and some of the best people watching in North Portland.

Mississippi Avenue District Homes
The real estate in Mississippi is characterized by a mix of bungalows, big old Portland foursquares, a couple of Victorians, and more recently some modern properties. The Mississippi Avenue Lofts are some of the “greenest” condos in the country, receiving a LEED® Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council.
Not every house has been redone, and there are still plenty of long-time residents living in well-kept but dated homes, but the gentrification has resulted in a wave of renovation and new construction in the area. Many residents, both old and new, have already cashed out and moved on. The new citizens of homes in North Mississippi Avenue District fall predominantly into the “youthful hipster” demographic.
