Laurelhurst Homes
Laurelhurst was a 462-acre orchard for a time, and then a ranch. The land was sold to the Laurelhurst Company in 1909 for $2 million, the largest sale of land in Portland’s history at the time. The Laurelhurst Company promoted this area by advertising that “everything of an objectionable nature will be excluded”. Meandering streets were meant to create a bit of the “county in the city”. The promotional brochure billed it as a “bungalow fairyland”.
Laurelhurst is entirely residential and the overwhelming majority of homes are single-family detached houses built between 1910 and the Second World War, with 86% home ownership. The area is laid out in a grid with flat winding streets. Most homes have mature trees, parks are wooded. Architecture runs the gamut from foursquares to tile-roofed Spanish colonials, although bungalows of various sizes and configurations are the most common house types. There are sidewalks for walking. The neighborhood is very walkable with walk scores in the high 60s to low 70s as recorded by Walk Score.
The neighborhood is a mix of long-time residents and young families. Many of the latter are attracted by the quality of Laurelhurst Elementary School. Another attraction is Laurelhurst Park, one of Portland’s premier parks. The park is lovely, and features a spring-fed lake, mature trees, a playground, tennis and basketball courts, soccer field, volley courts, horseshoe pit and picnic tables and paved and unpaved paths. In February of 2001 Laurelhurst Park named to the National Register of Historic Places.
The average price for homes sold in the Laurelhurst neighborhood in 2007 was $566,049.
The zip code is 97232.
