Irvington Homes
Typical Irvington homes have wraparound porches, heavy pillars and vaulting eaves are quintessentially Portland-style houses, but bigger. The neighborhood was named after William Irving, who claimed land in the area in 1852. After his death his widow and son began subdividing and selling much of the original claim. Many of Irvington’s large, historic homes were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. About half of the housing was built between 1920 and 1939, and many are even older.
The houses were built well and the housing stock varies from older mansions, Old Portland foursquares, barn-like Dutch colonials, and English cottages and Tudor-style homes. There are also fine examples of other early late nineteenth and early twentieth century styles: Spanish colonial pseudo-villas, Victorians, large arts-and crafts mansions, prairie style homes, and plantation-style colonial revival homes.
Each year during the Christmas season a group of owners offer open houses to the public that can be toured on horse drawn carriages. Every year in May the Irvington Home Tour shows off a selection of the neighborhood’s historic houses.
Neighborhood boundaries are from 7th on the West to 26th on the East, south to Broadway and North to Fremont. NE Knott runs through the heart of Irvington and is lined with some of Irvington’s most beautiful homes. Few major streets run through the core of Irvington, and those that do mainly carry neighborhood traffic, not commuters.
The neighborhood is flat with mature trees on just about every yard. Parks are wooded. The street pattern is a grid with sidewalks for walking. These characteristics appeal to a wide range of buyers, from affluent empty nesters to families with young children.
The average price for homes sold in Irvington in 2007 was $562,107. The average listed for sale price in August ’08 is $721,713. The average square footage is 3,316. The zip code is 97212.
