Hawthorne Portland Real Estate

The Hawthorne neighborhood, also known as Sunnyside, borders the Southern edge of Laurelhurst at Stark Street, the western edge of Mt. Tabor at about 52nd , the eastern edge of Ladd’s addition around 21st, and the northern edge of the Clinton area at Division Street. There are two main commercial areas to Sunnyside. One is the Hawthorne strip, which runs from 12th all the way up to 50th.

Hawthorne is a fine walking street, you can easily spend a day or night wandering in and out of shop, bars and restaurants. Art galleries and unusual boutiques pepper the area. There are more bicycle riders and piercing parlors in this neighborhood than any other.

Hawthorne Portland Homes

The neighborhood is creative with locally owned one of a kind shops and homes with character. Visit the Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association web site for more information about the area. It is a young and vibrant neighborhood. The attraction of the area is it’s close-in location, access to public transportation, abundant local shopping dining, and affordable older Hawthorne homes. You are likely to see dreadlocked 20-somethings launching on hummus next to 30-somethings with kids in tow and 40-somethings instant-messaging coworkers in India on their laptops. Hawthorne is a laid-back, funky, bohemian neighborhood.

The other main commercial street is Belmont street, just 6 blocks north of Hawthorne. It too boasts many restaurants and small boutiques. Visit the Belmont Business Association web site for more information about Belmont. Another feature of these two streets are the host of new Hawthorne condo projects that have sprung up, especially in the last 2 to 3 years. Most of these new condos are very modern looking, but they blend into the classic but funky houses that surround these two areas.

Real estate in Hawthorne encompasses a wide range of styles. You’ll find lots of Craftsman, both large and small, and many of them have been painted bright and cheerful colors by their owners. Mixed in are some Victorians, and lots of bungalows. Homeowners make up 35% with renters at 65%. Singles are 42 percent of the residents. Only 7.4% of the households have children. Close to two-thirds of the residents are under 39 years of age.

The Hawthorne-Belmont District is flat with mature trees on properties. The street pattern is grid with sidewalks for walking.  Most of the addresses in Sunnyside have a score in the mid to high 80s (very walkable) as recorded by Walk Score. Drive time to downtown Portland is about 10-13 minutes. There are five bus routes running through the neighborhood. The average price for homes sold in the Sunnyside neighborhood in 2007 $357,390. Zip Codes 97214, & 97215.
